Spiritual Formation & Spiritual Direction
Spiritual FormationCHRIST FORMED IN US Spiritual transformation is the process by which Christ is formed in us through the Holy Spirit ... for the glory of God, for the abundance of our own lives, and for the sake of others. (Galatians 4:19; Romans 8:29; Romans 12:1, 2) Spiritual transformation in the lives of redeemed people is a testimony to the power of the Gospel and it results in an increasing capacity to discern and do the will of God. (Romans 12:2) “On the day I called, you answered me,
you increased my strength of soul.” Psalm 138:3 |
Spiritual DirectionSpiritual Direction is the practice
or process in which, with one another, we pay attention to the Triune God in this spiritual formation work, maturing in responding to Him in a never ending intimate relationship of love. “The art of spiritual direction
is cultivated through practice, by God’s grace. In the art of spiritual direction, the large issues include theological matters as well as moral psychological ones. Spiritual direction views the relationship as situated within a larger framework of God’s gracious presence.” Susan Phillips, Spiritual Director |
Welcome to the HeArt of Soul Care!
Thanks for stopping by. We are in the beginning stages of the launching of this endeavor so please stay tuned for the rest of the story and invitations! Since 1993, my vocation has been in the area of soul care in the venues of providing counseling, teaching, and supervision. In June of 2021, I completed the Selah Spiritual Direction training program. I heard of "spiritual direction" for the first time in 2007, but was more formally educated about this ministry and began receiving regular spiritual direction in 2012. Since that time, meeting with my spiritual director has been a central part of my spiritual rhythms and soul care that has been, and continues to be, a gift from God. The relationship between spiritual director and directees is a ministry one, not a client or professional one. Sincerely, Sherri |
What does Spiritual Direction look like? |
|
Spiritual direction occurs in an atmosphere of loving trust and prayerful listening together. In order to create an awareness of God’s presence, it often begins and ends with silent prayer. Conversations in spiritual direction may include all the areas of ordinary life - relationships, health, vocation, circumstances, joys and sorrows. Spiritual direction is God-oriented rather than goal-oriented. It is giving one's attention to God rather than to a particular problem that needs to be fixed or behavior that needs to be modified. It is responsive rather than directive, listening together to the Holy Spirit's presence and ways rather than the director telling the directee what to do. It is about listening with--together noticing senses of God's voice and direction--rather than "talking to." It is about loving trust . . . trusting that God is for us (not against us) ...
